VICTORIA – The Thunderbirds continued their fine form in the Canada West Rugby 7's season, going five for five in the Victoria tournament to put themselves in the pole position to reclaim the conference title.
The T-Birds had both variety and quantity in their offence, as they scored at least four tries in every match and had four different players who recorded five over the course of the weekend.
It was
Jaime Dickson who led the way on Day 1, as the speedy winger found the try zone in all three matches. That included a trio of scores in UBC's tournament-opening win over Lethbridge, all coming in a row (with the halftime break in between).
The Thunderbirds pitched a shutout against the Pronghorns, their third of the season and only one on the weekend.
Piper Logan,
Adia Pye and
Kiki Idowu all joined Dickson on the scoresheet (with
Lana Dueck and
Olivia Sarabura combining to hit five of their six converts) as the T-Birds won 40-0.
The second match was a bit closer, as for the second tournament in a row it was the Trinity Western Spartans who had the closest margin of defeat against the Thunderbirds (31-12). But while the Spartans did score a pair of tries in the second half, it only came after UBC had first grabbed a 24-0 lead with tries from Pye, Sarabura and two from Logan.
The blue and gold ended the first day of action with a 26-5 victory against Alberta. Idowu got the party started with a pair of tries in the first half, followed by scores from Pye and Dickson. Sarabura continued her strong run of kicking with three successful converts).
The T-Birds ran rampant on the Dinos to begin Day 2, dropping 49 points while allowing just a single try from Calgary's Bomi Lawal. Eight different Thunderbirds scored in the match, with Sarabura notching two tries and Dickson, Idowu, Logan, Pye,
Sarah MacPherson,
Rachel Smith and
Sara Tehrani all recording one as well.
For the second straight tournament the T-Birds faced the Vikes in the final match of the weekend, with both teams once again 4-0 to that point. And once again it was UBC who came out on top, claiming the win on the Vikes' home field.
After Pye and Ivy Poetker traded tries to make it 5-5 in the first half, the Thunderbirds scored 22 unanswered points the rest of the way. Sarabura, Idowu and Logan continued their scoring sprees with a try each, before Tehrani added the insurance marker on the last play of the match.
Now boasting a 10-0 record, the Thunderbirds will have the opportunity to claim their fourth straight Canada West title on home turf on March 6 and 7. That's when they will host the third and final tournament of the Rugby 7's season, held inside Thunderbird Stadium.
