Thunderbirds go four-for-four over Warriors

SALEM, Ore. – The bats well and truly got going on the second day of the Thunderbirds' four-game weekend series, as UBC (12-6, 3-0) took down Corban (0-10, 0-3) in a pair of comfortable victories.

Jessica Heutink had a phenomenal day at the plate for the T-Birds, hitting 4-4 with three walks, four RBIs and two runs scored over the two games combined. Kennedy Laird had her biggest game of the young season in the first half of the doubleheader, recording four RBIs on two hits.

Carleen Murray threw yet another complete game – her eighth of the season already – in the first outing of the day, and has now pitched 32.2 straight scoreless innings. Brynn Fortier and Madison Hiebert split the second game on the mound, allowing just two runs between them.

GAME ONE

Through the combination of a Marin Jorgenson lead-off single, a passed ball, and then Ava Bromley drawing a walk before stealing second, the T-Birds found themselves with runners on second and third with no outs to begin the game.

Heutink took advantage with a single to bring home both runners, giving her team a 2-0 lead. The T-Birds scored in bunches in this game, with their eight runs spread across just three different innings.

The next offensive highlights came in the third, when a Jillian Matsubara single brought home Heutink, who then scored herself two batters later on a Laird two-RBI double. Laird recorded another two RBIs in the eighth on a single that scored Matsubara and Claire Hill, not long after Hill had hit an RBI double of her own.

That ended the game at 8-0 following the sixth inning, with Murray allowing just four hits and striking out eight of the 22 batters she faced.

GAME TWO

The first inning was again bountiful in the second game of the day, with some strong hitting and Corban errors helping put UBC up 3-0 early. Hill, Matsubara and Heutink all played key roles again, with Mattea Burrill putting the ball in play for the third run that was scored following an error from the Warriors' shortstop.

While the Warriors did score a pair of runs in the fourth to temporarily make it a tighter game, the Thunderbirds struck back with four more in the top of the sixth to put it out of reach.

Rookies Tegan Harnett and Lauren Hounsell hit their first career doubles on consecutive at-bats, each bringing home a run. Heutink finished off the scoring with yet another hit and pair of RBIs, as the T-Birds cruised to the win from there.

Fortier earned her second win of the season after pitching the first 3.2 innings, while Hiebert threw a scoreless 3.1 innings in relief.

Next up for UBC is a very tough test, as they head to Ashland, Oregon to take on Southern Oregon, the defending NAIA champions, in another four-game series. That pair of doubleheaders are set for Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14.
