PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – The top-ranked UBC Thunderbirds remain perfect on the season after sealing a 6-0 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves at Masich Place Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The win etches a remarkable 10-game winning streak in the books for the T-Birds, while the clean sheet continues the team's active regular-season shutout streak dating back to October of the 2024 campaign.
A first-half scoring surge handed the 'Birds a comfortable three-goal advantage near the 30-minute mark and from there, the blue and gold tacked on another trio of scores in the final 45 to seal the win.
The 'Birds began with tons of pressure offensively and were rewarded in the 12th minute. Taiya Donahey delivered a lengthy lob pass from her own half, finding a racing
Jayda Thompson just outside the opponents' 18-yard box. T-Wolves netminder Johanna Rathke raced out to meet the flying forward, only for the fifth-year vet to unselfishly dump it off to
Sienna Gibson, who just needed a long-range tap to record her first tally since returning from her stint with the Canadian national team at the U-20 World Cup.
In the 27th minute,
Sophie Harrison received a pass just inside the box and was tripped up, handing UBC a penalty kick. Sizzling striker
Maddy Norman stepped up for her squad and tucked it into the bottom left corner underneath a diving Rathke to double the T-Birds' advantage.
Shortly after, the 'Birds were awarded another prime opportunity with a free kick from just outside the box on the right side.
Ella Santarsieri lined it up, curved it over UNBC's defensive wall before finding
Sabrina Nascimento Carreira, who headed home the visitors' third and final goal of the opening half.
The Timberwolves came out of the break with sound defence to limit T-Bird chances, but
Maddy Norman added another tally to her stat line in the 67th minute. After receiving a pass near the top of the box, Norman wasted no time and swiftly rifled a brilliant strike that landed just under the bar in the top left corner to add to UBC's lead.
In the 76th minute, Gibson was taken down in the box, leading to UBC's second penalty-kick opportunity of the game. Once again, Norman stepped in and went back to what worked the first time, aiming for the bottom left corner of the goal and converting to complete the hat trick.
UBC added another off the boot of
Sofia Peckenpaugh, who tucked one home off a rebound in the 87th minute to cap the 6-0 win.
The Thunderbirds will remain on the road for their next matchup as they head to Kamloops to take on the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 9.
