T-Birds end first weekend of Rugby 7’s season on top of the standings

EDMONTON – The Thunderbirds continued to roll on Day 2 of the Canada West Rugby 7's Alberta Tournament, picking up wins over Calgary and Victoria to end the first weekend of the season with a perfect 5-0 record.

Adia Pye continued to lead the charge offensively for the T-Birds, scoring four of her team's seven tries on the day to make it nine on the weekend overall. UBC has now won 30 straight 7's matches, dating back to the 2024 season.

The Thunderbirds began the day with a 17-0 win over the Dinos, their second shutout in as many matches following their 44-0 victory against Lethbridge to close Day 1. Pye and Lana Dueck both scored in the first half, with Pye adding another after halftime while the T-Birds' defence shut down any and all offensive forays from Calgary.

Both UBC and UVic entered the final match of the weekend at 4-0, with the Vikes coming off a victory over hosts Alberta that saw them turn a 14-7 halftime deficit into a 28-14 win. Once again, the Vancouver Island outfit found themselves down at halftime, with Pye and Olivia Sarabura combining to score 17 unanswered points in the opening period.

That commanding lead proved to be enough for the Thunderbirds to see themselves through, as though Olivia Newsome got a try back for the Vikes it was not enough. Dueck scored one more for some insurance, and UBC won 22-7.

Having won by three or more scores in all but one of their first five matches, the T-Birds were full value for their 5-0 record and 20 points that they earned in the overall Canada West standings. The Vikes sit in second place at 4-1.

Elsewhere, Trinity Western closed their weekend strong, defeating both Lethbridge and Alberta to earn a 3-2 record and finish the tournament in third place. Calgary's narrow win over the Pronghorns mean they exit the weekend in fourth, followed by the Pandas and then Lethbridge.

All six teams will be right back at it in just two weeks, when the second of three Canada West 7's tournaments is held in Victoria on February 7 and 8.
