Thunderbirds and Vikes lead after Day 1 of opening Rugby 7’s tournament

EDMONTON – Protected from the freezing elements, six teams from Canada West hit the pitch for Day 1 action inside the Dome at Foote Field for the first of three Canada West Rugby 7's tournaments.

The UBC Thunderbirds, three-time reigning Canada West Rugby 7's Champions, sit atop the standings, going 3-0 on Saturday. Their rivals, the Victoria Vikes, also went undefeated ahead of the matchup between those two teams on Sunday.

The Trinity Western Spartans, Calgary Dinos and host Alberta Pandas all found themselves in a three-way tie for third, with 1-2 records. The Lethbridge Pronghorns ended the day winless.

Nine different players scored tries for UBC over their three matches, led by Kiki Idowu and Adia Pye who each recorded five. They both scored three in the tournament's opening match, a 55-7 victory over the Pandas.

Their second match was much closer, as while the Spartans went into halftime down 15-5, they struck back early in the second period with a Kelsa Kempf score to cut the lead in half. Mya Koleba responded with a try, but Kempf hit right back to help make it a three-point lead in the late stages.

The T-Birds were able to close things out, however, with fifth-year senior Olivia Sarabura providing an insurance try and successful convert to close out a 27-17 win.

The third and final outing of the day was less close, with the Thunderbirds recording a shutout against the Pronghorns. Jaime Dickson helped push UBC's lead out in the first half with consecutive tries, as the T-Birds eventually prevailed 44-0.

The Thunderbirds have two more matches remaining in the season-opening tournament, both taking place on Sunday. First, they face the Dinos at 9:44 a.m., before taking on Victoria at 12:44 p.m. (all times PT).
