VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds' biggest indoor festival event of the year is little over a week away as the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre prepares to host the 2026 Winter Classic on Friday, January 23.
A doubleheader extravaganza vs UBC's cross-town rival Trinity Western Spartans features a pair of red hot rivalries on the ice and fun and games galore off of it.
Festivities officially get underway at 4:00 p.m. when the No. 1 ranked U SPORTS UBC women's squad faces off vs the Spartans.
The Canada West's west division leading men's team takes to the ice at 7:30 p.m. in what will be their final regular season meeting with the Spartans as the conference playoffs draw ever closer.
Both the UBC men's and women's teams have been ranked at or near the top in the entire country all season long with both squads intent on pushing for conference and national championship titles. Friday night not only serves as the biggest spectacle on ice this campus calendar year, but also one of the last opportunities to witness these powerhouses before the post-season arrives.
While the blue and gold battle it out centre stage on the ice, the arena concourse will be chock full of games, music, food, drink and prizes.
The BC Lions and Vancouver Goldeneyes will both be on hand with activity based giveaways, as will the NSL champion Vancouver Rise with their Diana B. Matheson Cup in tow.
Lululemon, the UBC Student Alumni Council, ICBC, the AMS and others will also have booths and games for all ages.
One ticket gets you access to both games, but with an expected sellout looming, best not to wait to secure your spot at the biggest night on ice this side of False Creek!
