PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – The blue and gold left no doubt Sunday afternoon, as they recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory over their hosts, the UNBC Timberwolves. The T-Birds recorded an incredible 46 shot attempts on the night, and were rewarded with a steady stream of goals including a brace from
Holly Whelan.
Johanna Rathke once again did a fine job in the UNBC net to stop as much as she could, but the Thunderbirds proved to have the required firepower once again.
The goals began early with one from rookie
Victoria Cronkhite, who buried the ball from close range after a deflected cross fell kindly to her in the six-yard box. It was Whelan who put the ball in, and Whelan who scored the second of the game in the 23rd minute. The third-year midfielder was sprung by a fantastic ball over the top by
Taiya Dennehy, and Whelan deftly lofted her shot over Rathke and into the back of the net.
Less than a minute later,
Sienna Gibson made it 3-0 off a nice cross from
Ella Sunde. While the Timberwolves defence fought valiantly to block her initial shot, Gibson made no mistake the second time of asking.
Sunde then turned from provider to goalscorer before halftime, pouncing on a rebound from a long-distance Whelan shot. The veteran defender is having a breakout campaign so far this year offensively, as after scoring seven goals in her first three years at UBC (and no more than three in a single season), Sunde now has four goals in six games already in 2025, and is tied with Whelan for third in Canada West.
To put herself into that tie, Whelan needed to score again in the second half, and that's exactly what she did in the 51st minute. That ended the scoring, and the duo of
Ashleigh Ramsay and
Emma Sparrow shared the shutout in the UBC net. The T-Birds are still yet to allow a goal this season through six games.
That streak will again be put to the test next Saturday, as the Thunderbirds take on Thompson Rivers in a single-game weekend at Thunderbird Stadium.
