T-Birds douse Heat to improve to 9-0

KELOWNA – For the third straight game the UBC Thunderbirds recorded a 5-0 victory, keeping their winning and shutout streak going through the first five weeks of the season.

The T-Birds jumped out to a big lead midway through the first half, scoring three goals in less than five minutes to take a commanding advantage. Maddy Norman then scored a brace in the second half of action to salt the game away.

Jayda Thompson took charge on the opener, driving in from the right and placing a powerful low strike underneath the Heat keeper. Ella Sunde then flexed her set piece mastery, getting on the end of a Taiya Dennehy free kick to loft a header to the back post.

Just a minute after the restart the net rippled once again, as Thompson turned provider and set up Sienna Gibson for a side-footed effort, her fifth of the campaign.

Norman made her presence felt off the bench after the halftime break, first running onto the end of a long ball from Hannah Bains in the 55th minute and burying it with her first touch. She then took advantage of a bobbled ball in the box in the 68th and looped it over top of the keeper for her third goal of the year.

Now over halfway done the regular season, the Thunderbirds (perhaps to their chagrin given their current momentum) enter a bye period and will next play again on October 3rd – again against UBC Okanagan.
