T-Birds men win in dramatic playoff, women dominate at SOU Spring Classic

EAGLE POINT, Ore. – It was a close call, but the T-Birds' CCC win streak lives on.

UBC won both sides of the SOU Spring Classic on Tuesday, with the men's and women's teams extending their undefeated run at Cascade Collegiate Conference events to nearly three years.
On the men's side, the team was in serious jeopardy of its first second-place finish in a CCC event since the Corban Spring Invite in 2022.

The 'Birds were down a stroke to Lewis-Clark State after the first round, down five strokes after two rounds, then appeared to outperform the Warriors by eight strokes in the final round on Tuesday to snatch victory until a late ruling by tournament officials took three strokes off of the Lewis-Clark State total to send the Warriors and 'Birds into a playoff, tied at -10 (854) for the three-round tournament.

The playoff involved all five players on the two teams replaying the 18th hole. The 'Birds came up clutch, shooting a combined -2 as a group, while the Warriors fired a combined +2 to give UBC the victory.

There was no such drama on the women's side.

Continuing an utterly dominant conference season, the T-Birds women jumped out to an early lead and built it steadily through the two-round event. The blue and gold led by 18 after the first round and finished at +4 (580) to end up 49 strokes ahead of runner-up Oregon Tech (629, +53).

Individually, NAIA No.2-ranked player Grace Bell built on a season UBC golf fans won't soon forget by taking home medalist honours for her second victory of the year and fifth top-two finish. Bell (142, -2) also extended her streak of finishing top-six in every tournament she's entered this campaign, including three NCAA Division I events.

She was far from the only T-Bird to enjoy a strong tournament, as UBC had the top five players on the leaderboard, including Elizabeth Labbé playing as an individual. First-year Sienna Harder (143, -1) was runner-up, followed by Labbé (145, +1), Una Chou (146, +2) and Jessica Ng (149, +5).

On the men's side, Dylan MacDonald (211, -5) was the top T-Bird, finishing in second, two strokes behind Lewis-Clark State's Alex Navarro (209, -7). First-year Jake Houston (212, -4), playing as an individual, took an impressive third place. He was followed by Aidan Schumer (214, -2) tied for fourth as the only other T-Bird under par.

The 'Birds now get two weeks off before they have a chance to finish a third straight double perfect Cascade Collegiate Conference season at the CCC Championships, starting on Easter Monday. The three-day, three-round event is being held April 21-23 at Glendoveer Golf Club in Portland, Oregon.
