'Birds blanked twice by Yotes

CALDWELL, Idaho – The UBC Thunderbirds (11-9, 6-6) fell 8-0 to the NAIA No.20-ranked College of Idaho Yotes (16-4, 9-3) in both games of their doubleheader on Saturday, one a conference matchup and the other a non-conference contest. The Yotes takes the series 2-1 after the teams split Friday's doubleheader.

Game 1: College of Idaho 8, British Columbia 0

In the first game of the day on Saturday, the Yotes wasted little time jumping out to an early lead and never looked back.

The scoring began in the third inning, when College of Idaho exploded for six runs, led by a two-RBI homer from Brinley Iverson that brought Kamryn Ham across the plate. Ashlynn Nixon and Hallie Campbell followed with key hits, and Madelyn Powell added two more RBIs in the fifth inning which captured the victory via run rule.

A strong pitching performance from Abbey Brooks (8-0) shut out the Thunderbirds through five innings. Shae Sever, Jessica Heutink, and Jillian Matsubara had UBC's only hits.

The Yotes sealed the win with eight hits, including a home run, and five RBI from Powell alone.

Game 2: College of Idaho 8, British Columbia 0

The Yotes completed the Saturday sweep with another 8-0 win, this time in non-conference play.

College of Idaho took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with Iverson and Ham scoring on a walk and a sacrifice fly. The Yotes then added to their advantage with a three-run third inning and a two-run sixth inning.

Sydney Jund contributed two RBIs, while Ham drove in another, finishing the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Apple Acklin (1-0) pitched six shutout innings in her first career start, allowing only four hits and one walk while striking out one.

Kaitlyn Kim reached base three times for the T-Birds on a pair of hits, including a double to left field in the sixth inning.

After 20 straight road games to begin their season, the 'Birds finally play their long-awaited home opener next weekend, taking on Carroll College at 2:00 p.m. (PT) on Friday, March 28th at Collings Field at Nobel Park. That kicks of a four-game series with doubleheaders scheduled for both Friday and Saturday. Tickets are not required to attend.
