PENDLETON, Ore. – The UBC Thunderbirds (10-6, 5-4) fell 4-0 to the NAIA No.14-ranked Eastern Oregon Mountaineers (10-3, 8-1) in Saturday's finale of their three-game series.
Poor weather forced the cancelation of the fourth game of the series, meaning the T-Birds were swept by the Mountaineers after a pair of tight, two-run defeats on Friday, one going to extra innings.
On Saturday, 'Birds pitcher
Carleen Murray (5-4) continued her strong start to the season, taking another tough luck loss after holding the mighty Mountaineers to one run on three hits over five innings.
Playing third base,
Jillian Matsubara had two of UBC's four hits, slapping a leadoff single in the third inning and stroking a double down the left field line in the fifth.
The 'Birds have played 11 straight games on the road since the start of the Cascade Collegiate Conference season and will make one more road trip before their home opener.
The blue and gold are going to Caldwell to take on the College of Idaho in a four-game series next weekend, with doubleheaders scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
The home opener at Collings Field at Nobel Park is on Friday, March 28 when the T-Birds host Caroll College at 2 p.m. (PT).
