T-Birds gut Bisons for eighth consecutive win

WINNIPEG, Man. – Jake Lee and captain Chris Douglas both enjoyed a three point night while the UBC Thunderbirds (8-1) scored seven unanswered goals to earn a monstrous 8-1 win over the host Manitoba Bisons (4-4-1) Friday night at Wayne Fleming Arena.

Dawson Pasternak evened the game for Manitoba with his third of the season early in the second period, but it was all UBC from there on out, Lee's game winner at 6:37 of the frame standing as the game winner and starting an avalanche of T-Bird tallies as the blue and gold earned an eighth consecutive win to remain alone atop the west division.

Limiting the Bisons to just a single shot in the first and two in the third, UBC outshot Manitoba 37-9 by the time all was said and done.

Ty Thorpe vs Manitoba, Nov. 29, 2024

Special teams were on point with UBC scoring twice on the power play on five opportunities while killing off both Bisons man advantages.

Brett Mirwald picked up his fifth win of the season in net while improving his conference best goals against average to 1.40 to go alongside his Canada West best .938 save percentage.

Sasha Mutala gave UBC a two-goal advantage with his fifth of the campaign less than two minutes after Lee's go-ahead marker while Nathan Sullivan added another on the power play at 10:53 to give the 'Birds a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Josh Williams, Ty Thorpe and Douglas' second of the game all came within five minutes of each other in the third to stake out a six goal lead before things got testy with a slew of penalties including a Bisons five minute kneeing major assessed to Kaycee Cole.

Lee scored another on the ensuing power play for a final exclamation point on a thoroughly dominant performance.

The 'Birds will aim to make it nine straight victories Saturday for the first time since the 2023-24 season. Puck drop for the final regular season meeting with the Bisons is set for 12 p.m. PT. The game will be streamed live on Canada West TV.
