VANCOUVER, B.C. – The UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team wrote themselves into the Canada West history books on Saturday evening, and they're not finished yet.
UBC's windy and rain-soaked 3-0 victory over the visiting University of Victoria Vikes saw the Thunderbirds stay perfect on the year, making it back-to-back Canada West regular seasons where they haven't dropped a single point.
Two first half wonder strikes from
Ava Alexander and a Vikes own goal had the Thunderbirds three up at the half and that was to be enough for UBC to secure a historic win. It was fitting for Alexander's fine performance to happen on her Senior Night, as she was honoured before the match alongside
Dakota Beckett,
Sophia Ferreira,
Emily Parker,
Sydney Slater and
Ella Sunde.
While two perfect seasons is an incredible achievement on its own, the feat is made all the more remarkable by that fact that UBC didn't concede a single goal this year on the way to their first-place finish in the Canada West Pacific Division, another conference record.
"Unbelievable. Nothing you could ever think about," was UBC head coach
Jesse Symons immediate thoughts on his side's record-breaking season. "For me, it's just the consistency and the mindset of the entire team from front to back and goalkeeping. It showcased what we needed from game one to game 14. What a year, what a run, and it's now time to keep that rolling."
If the pressure was on UBC to make history on Senior Night, it didn't show, and the Thunderbirds took the game to the Vikes once again from the get-go. Alexander opened the scoring just five minutes in after showing great footwork to set up a rocket into the top right corner.
Victoria's Taiya Scorey also had an early opportunity to get a shot on goal, but it was stopped by Beckett, who after making three saves on the night recorded her 31st career Canada West win, which is a program record.
UBC made it two in the 14th minute when an Alexander cross was sliced into the UVic net by their own player in the wet and windy conditions.
Alexander then got her second of the night, and
Sophie Harrison got her second assist, with another rocket of a shot, this time to the top left corner of the goal.
As the conditions worsened, goalscoring chances were at a premium in the second half, and both teams were unable to add to the scoreline.
The Vikes had a couple half-chances late, with Adrianna Hilton testing her luck from a long-distance free kick and then a pair of potentially dangerous crosses put into the area within a few minutes of each other, but Beckett had safe hands each time.
The final whistle sparked joyous scenes among the Thunderbirds players, staff and fans in the stand, but they don't have much time to rest on their laurels, with the postseason getting underway in a week's time.
UBC's victory saw them extend their winning run to an incredible 37 matches in regular and postseason play. The No. 1 seed will now kick off the defence of their Canada West championship when they host Saskatchewan Huskies in next Saturday's quarter-finals at Thunderbird Stadium.
UVic have now dropped to fourth in the Pacific Division standings after the weekend's results and face a tricky trip to Alberta to take on the unbeaten Calgary Dinos in their playoff opener.
