CALDWELL, Ida. – The UBC Thunderbirds continued their streak of dominance in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, winning both sides of the College of Idaho Invitational on Tuesday to keep perfect records in conference play halfway through the CCC season.
The T-Birds women (+21) were steady through both rounds of their half of the event at TimberStone Golf Course, posting scores of 299 (+11) and 298 (+10) to see a 12-stroke lead over Oregon Tech (+57) after round one balloon to a 36-shot win after 36 holes.
T-Birds second-year
Keira Hou made a late charge to tie College of Idaho's Reece Gary for the top spot on the individual leaderboard at even par, and they needed to go to a second playoff hole before Gary eventually pulled out the win. The second place finish means Hou has had a remarkable start to her first season as a regular in the UBC lineup, as she also won the first Cascade Conference event of the year, Walla Walla's Wine Valley Invitational, in September.
Just behind the top two was T-Birds' first-year
Grace Yao (+1) placing third, the best finish of her young, collegiate career.
Sienna Harder (+10) was in sixth,
Jessica Ng (+11) tied for seventh and
Morgan Best (+12) was in ninth, to round out a very strong overall showing from the women's team.
The 'Birds men (-11) had a much smoother ride on their way to the top of the podium compared to the first CCC event of the season, which saw them pull off a massive comeback to claim victory. This time around, UBC led from start to finish, with a five-stroke advantage over Lewis-Clark State after the first round exploding into a 23-shot lead after round two, thanks to the T-Birds finding by far the best single round score of any team all event with a collective 277 (-11) in their second 18.
There was no comeback to be had for their opponents on Tuesday either, as UBC shot a 287 (-1) to post the best three team rounds of the tournament and defeat second place Oregon Tech (+18) by 27 strokes.
The best player on the course was a T-Bird, but medalist
Leighton Wright's phenomenal 208 (-8) did not count toward the team score, as he was entered into the event as an individual before pulling off an impressive, five-stroke victory. Wright was the only player to finish under par in all three rounds and the only person to break 70 twice, shooting 68 (-4) and 69 (-3) in his final two rounds to pull away with the win.
He was far from the only standout UBC men's golfer at the event, as the 'Birds swept the top five on the leaderboard.
Forrest Van Alstine (-3) was runner-up, followed by a three-way tie for third between
Aneesh Kaura,
Jake Houston and
Brett Stouffer at -1.
The blue and gold finish their busy and top-heavy fall schedule next week with the Canada West Championships, the only in-province event on their 2025-26 calendar, taking place October 20-21 at Chilliwack Golf Club. UBC's women have won the event every year since its inception in 2019, while the men have never finished lower than second.
