VANCOUVER – The turn of the calendar to a new year means many things, but one reliability is the return of the biggest hockey game of the campus year – the Winter Classic.
2025's version of the UBC Thunderbirds' biggest indoor festival is now just a week away as the T-Birds host a doubleheader against their cross-town rival Trinity Western Spartans on Friday, January 17 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
The Canada West leading UBC women's team kicks off the event at 4:00 p.m. while the men's team – which enters 2025 on an eight game win streak and in a heated battle for first place in the West Division – battles the Spartans at 7:30 p.m.
With both the men's and women's teams looking to defend their historic Canada West Championship sweep in 2024, this year's Winter Classic not only features two of the top university hockey programs this country has to offer but also plenty of off-ice entertainment, prizes and fun for students, alumni and fans of all ages.
The concourse will be filled with booths featuring games and giveaways including mountain lift passes from Coca Cola Canada and Granville Island Brewing gift cards. United Way, AMS Events, the Student Alumni Council and others will have activation games for prizes, ICBC will be back with their ever-popular (and safe) axe throwing and a DJ will be on site to get the party started early and keep it going all day long.
The ice will remain busy even during intermissions with youth hockey scrimmages and a mascot relay.
As the 2025 Canada West playoffs ever nearer with just ten games left in the regular season, both the T-Birds men and women are in prime position to not only secure home post-season berths but contend for yet another dual conference title sweep.
One ticket for the 2025 Winter Classic on January 17 gets access to both the women's and men's games and all the festivities throughout the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
