DANA POINT, Calif. – The UBC Thunderbirds (280-275-299, +14) held their own while playing up in an NCAA Division I tournament this week, taking sixth place at the 10-team Vanharte Orange County Collegiate hosted by the University of California at Fullerton and UC Irvine.
The T-Birds gave their DI opponents a scare early on in the tournament, leading after 27 holes and sitting third at -5 when the second round was suspended Monday evening due to darkness. At that time,
Dylan MacDonald (-4) was tied for fourth individually while
Aidan Schumer and
John Paul Kahlert (-3) were tied for seventh.
On Tuesday,
Mackenzie Bickell led the way for the 'Birds, finishing off a team-best second round 66 (-4) and then following up with a team-best mark of 72 (+2) in the third round.
Overall, Schumer (70-67-75,+2), Bickell (74-66-72, +2) and MacDonald (68-68-76, +2) were the top individual golfers for UBC, each finishing in a tie for 22
nd in the 64-player field. MacDonald shot -7 on the course's par 5s, tied for the best mark in the tournament.
UBC finished just one shot back of fifth place Sacramento State and two shots back of fourth place Gonzaga, while sitting at least seven strokes ahead of the four NCAA Division I programs behind them.
