Thunderbirds make history with win over Spartans

LANGLEY – For the first time in Canada West history, a team has finished a regular season with a perfect record. That team is the UBC Thunderbirds, who dispatched the Trinity Western Spartans 2-0 on the road to improve to 14-0 on the year.

"What a year for this team! Every player gave so much and pushed so consistently through each match," said Thunderbirds head coach Jesse Symons. "We are ready for the playoffs and excited to represent UBC in the quarters next week."

The T-Birds scored both of their goals in the first half, just a few minutes apart from each other. Holly Whelan struck first, off a deflected pass from Jade Taylor-Ryan in the 19th minute. Stopping her run at the edge of the box, Whelan did not hesitate to fire and found the far post for her ninth goal of the campaign.

Taylor-Ryan played provider once again in the 23rd, continuing her incredible second half of the season. Jayda Thompson hit an early cross from the outside, and the Ottawa native deftly flicked the ball in behind the defence into the path of Nisa Reehal, who fired it home.

Up 2-0 heading into halftime, the Thunderbirds were looking good. TWU made them work for the win in the second half though, recording four shots on target in the final 45 minutes, while the T-Birds managed just one.

Dakota Beckett just about to boot the ball up the pitch, her leg pulled back with remarkable extension, just about to swing forward to strike. A Spartans player out of focus in the foreground running toward her.

Dakota Beckett did her part to keep the shutout intact, making a season-high six saves on the night. The clean sheet was UBC's tenth on the season.

With the regular season done, attention now turns to the playoffs. The T-Birds enter the Canada West playoffs as the #1 seed in the Pacific Division, and will host their quarterfinal match at Thunderbirds Stadium next weekend.
