Dzikowski leads T-Birds to season opening win

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – In a dominant season opening performance, the UBC Thunderbirds earned a 4-0 victory over the host UNBC Timberwolves Friday night at Prince George's Masich Place Stadium.

Sebastian Dzikowski scored twice in less than three minutes early in the second half to double UBC's half-time advantage while Bennett McKay earned the clean sheet making three saves.

"I'm really pleased with the overall performance tonight, many individuals had strong games and collectively I thought it was a very good effort," said UBC head coach Mike Mosher following his T-Birds' first game in Prince George in four years. "It was nice to see big Seby open his account with two goals tonight in the attack and I'm equally as happy with the clean sheet."

Veteran forward Bradley Richardson opened scoring in the 11th minute for the visitors. A Dzikowski shot attempt deflected off a Timberwolves defender and was found by Richardson who raced onto the ball ahead of a pair of defenders, placing it in the low corner.

Defender Chris Lee doubled the lead in the 35th as the West Vancouver native made a triumphant return to the lineup having last suited up for the blue and gold in the 2021 season.

After a solid opening 45, the T-Birds picked up right where they left off to start the second half as Dzikowski scored his first of the night in the 53rd minute. Lee made a nice cross to Dzikowski whose initial shot was stopped by UNBC keeper Daniel Zadravec. But Dzikowski had the ball punched right back to him just a few yards out and his second effort found its way to the back of the net.

In the 55th Dzikowski completed the brace as he grazed the ball on a header from close range with Brennan Fuerst collecting his first UBC point on the assist.
