T-Birds drop 10-4 decision at Southern Oregon to conclude CCC regular season

Ashland, Oregon – The Southern Oregon Raiders relied on lively bats en route to downing the visiting UBC Thunderbirds 10-4 on the final day of the Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season Sunday afternoon at University Field. The meeting was a make-up game after an earlier contest was postponed on March 25 in Vancouver.

Mia Valcke was one of the few bright spots at the dish for the 'Birds going three for four which included blasting a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to even the early score at 1-1, while finishing with two RBI and two runs scored on the day. Meanwhile Kaitlyn Eng made her mark and sparked some life in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to a two RBI triple to right center field to bring the T-Birds within six runs at 10-4 which would be as close as the visitors would come.

The Raiders totaled 14 hits, getting two apiece from Deja Acosta (2 runs, 1 RBI), Sarah Kerling (1 run) and Sammie Pemberton (2 RBIs, 1 run). They also took advantage of five UBC errors, scoring seven of their runs unearned.

SOU went ahead for good with a three-run third inning, as Riley Donovan hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly and Pemberton followed by lacing a two-run double.

Starting pitcher Holly Fletcher got the decision for the Raiders to improve to 4-1. She recorded all but the final out and held the Thunderbird to one run through the first six innings.

Shae Seaver started on the mound for the 'Birds and went four and two third innings allowing 10 hits and seven runs while managing two strike outs before giving way to Lindsay Bell the rest of the way allowing four hits, three runs and striking out one.

The T-Birds finished the regular season at 24-19 overall and 17-13 in the conference good for fifth spot in the CCC standings to be one of six playoff teams advancing to compete at next weekend's CCC Championship Tournament in Klamath Falls, Oregon running from May 5 to 7th. UBC is set to take on the number 4 seed Eastern Oregon to open the tournament on Friday May, 5 at 9:00 a.m. PT.
