VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds are off to a flying start at the 2023 Cascade Collegiate Conference Golf Championships in Creswell, OR. Earlier today at the Emerald Valley Golf Club, the UBC women's program (+3 combined on the day) jumped out to a 25-shot lead the next closest team (Lewis-Clark State) while the UBC men sit tied for first (+11 combined on the day) with Lewis-Clark State.

All five of the UBC women competing at the event are ranked in the Top 7 after one day of competition.
Jessica Ng is the outright individual leader after firing a two-under score of 70, and is closely followed by fellow T-Birds
Sonja Tang (E, 72) and
Grace Bell (+1, 73).
Una Chou is next in a tie for fourth place at +4, and
Elizabeth Labbe is also in striking distance of top spot after a Round 1 score of +7.
Ng's Monday round consisted of seven birdies – six of which came on her final eight holes. Despite a double-bogey on the par five 13
th, Ng completed the back nine in three-under par.
Things are a little closer on the men's side as UBC sits deadlocked with Lewis-Clark State at +11 while Bushnell University sits six shots back at +17. Lewis-Clark State's Jørgen Viken leads the field with a score of -5 (66), but UBC's
Aidan Schumer was the only other individual to fire a round under par (-1, 70). Schumer sat +3 after his first nine holes, but answered in a big way on the back with four birdies and zero bogies.
John Paul Kahlert enters Tuesday in a tie for sixth place (+3, 74) and fellow teammate
Hudson LaFayette is also in the Top 10 after a +4 round of 75.
Mackenzie Bickell (+5, 76) and Dylan Macdonald (+6, 77) rounded out the Day 1 scores for UBC.
Action continues tomorrow morning from Creswell, OR with two rounds apiece remaining for all participants. UBC is looking to capture their third consecutive Cascade Collegiate Conference championships on both sides.
