UBC earns Saturday split vs Providence

MISSOULA, Mont. – The UBC Thunderbirds saw their four game win streak snapped with a 5-4 loss to the University of Providence Argos but rebounded with an 8-1 win for the Saturday split.

Game one of the doubleheader – also serving as the conference series finale – saw a 4-1 fourth inning lead collapse when the Argos (1-14, 1-8) scored three in the bottom of the fifth.

Providence pitcher Devon Creech held the T-Birds off the board in the sixth and seventh providing opportunity for the Argos to secure their first win of the season and they did just that with an Azia Humphrey walk-off double, scoring Gracie Fleming who led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple.

Creech picked up the win for the hosts, holding the T-Birds (13-7, 7-4) to no runs on four hits in the final four innings of the game.

Shae Sever was tagged with the loss for UBC after splitting pitching duties with starter Shelby Kempel and Lindsay Bell.

The weekend finale saw the Argos score first in the bottom of the opening inning on a Ryen Palmer sacrifice fly. But the T-Birds held Providence off the board the rest of the way.

UBC scored once in the second and again in the third to take the lead when Sever scored from third on a fielding error.

It remained a one run game until the fifth when the T-Birds plated five runs including a Kaitlyn Kim two-RBI single. Mia Valcke drove in another run for good measure in the sixth.

Sever earned her sixth win of the season as sophomore allowed just the one run on eight Argo hits with eight strikeouts through six and two-thirds. Bell came in with two outs in the seventh and struck out Palmer to end the game.

Gabrielle Dorval and Keona Nordquist each had four hit days while Kim amassed four RBI.

The T-Birds are back home next weekend when they host Southern Oregon. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1:30 p.m. PT at Collings Field.
