T-Birds bats come up big in sweep of Argos

MISSOULA, Mont. – The UBC Thunderbirds have made it four straight wins following a Friday sweep of the University of Providence Argos in Missoula, Montana.

On an afternoon that saw plenty of T-Birds chip in on offence, Keona Nordquist had a five hit, two RBI day while Shae Sever and Lindsay Bell both gave UBC solid starts on the mound with each picking up a win.

The doubleheader was played in somewhat neutral territory with the games being moved to the University of Montana's facilities due to inclement weather providing trouble in Great Falls.

Game one saw the Argos strike first with a two-run Gracie Fleming triple. The Argos scored one more in the third but the damage had been done by UBC in the meantime with the T-Birds plating five in the top of the second and another in the third.

With an 8-3 lead heading into the sixth, the 'Birds burst the floodgates wide open with eight more runs to invoke the mercy rule. Nordquist notched her final hit of the game with a two-RBI single. Sever and Mia Valcke followed up with RBI singles of their own.

Brittain Hunsberger pitched the bottom of the sixth for the T-Birds and promptly retired the only three batters she faced to end the game.

Game two saw UBC pick up where they left off with a four run top of the fourth. Olivia Malesku plated the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly. With the bases loaded, Gabrielle Dorval hit a grounder to second allowing Nordquist to score. Hunsberger followed immediately with a two-RBI single before Argos starter Deven
Creech was able to end the inning with one of her three strikeouts of the game.

Creech then prevented the 'Birds from doing any more damage until the fifth when UBC scored three more times to give themselves a 7-0 lead.

The Argos made a game of it in the bottom of the sixth scoring five times, two of them thanks to T-Bird fielding errors.

Cutting the lead down to two heading into the seventh, Creech once again pitched a shutout inning to give the hosts an opportunity while down to their final three outs. But Shelby Kempel, who took the mound to start the final inning, closed out the game without allowing any more across as the 'Birds won their eighth straight game against Providence dating back to 2019.

The 'Birds and Argos will close out their three game Cascade Collegiate Conference series Friday at 10:00 a.m. PT before playing a non-conference affair immediately afterwards.
