VICTORIA - The U SPORTS No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds (10-0-2) kept their undefeated season going, winning 2-1 in Victoria to sweep a home and home series with the Vikes (7-3-2).
Sebastian Dzikowski tallied the game-winner for his 14th goal on the campaign, tying the UBC single-season record set by Craig Chiasson in 1994, with four regular season matches still to play. Dzikowski's 14 successful strikes are double anyone else in Canada West and three more than the next leading scorer across all of U SPORTS.
The T-Birds struck first, or rather Fuerst, in 21st minute.
Luke Norman stripped a Vikes player of the ball as they were attempting a clearance, used some fancy footwork to draw in a pair of defenders, before dishing it off to
Brennen Fuerst. The rookie midfielder stepped into the pass and one-timed a laser from just outside the middle of the box into the top left corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
UBC held that slim lead into half-time, but quickly added to it coming out of the break. Barely a minute in to the second frame, Norman got his ankle hooked by a defender while just inside the area and the 'Birds were awarded a penalty. Dzikwoski stepped up to the spot and fired a nearly unsavable strike into the bottom right corner of the goal to double the UBC lead.
The Vikes showed plenty of fight against the top team in the country, making things interesting on a 66th minute goal from Mattheus Achadinha, his first of the year. That's as close as they would come however, as the blue and gold held on from there to top their longtime rivals for the second time in three days.
Next up for the 'Birds is a pair of home dates next weekend. The Thompson Rivers Wolfpack come to town for a late 7:30 p.m. (PT) start at Thunderbird Stadium on Friday, October 13th. Then on Saturday the 14th, the T-Birds host the UBCO Heat for a 7:00 p.m. (PT) kickoff. Catch all of the action, live or on demand, on
Canada West TV.
