T-Birds Kick Off Weekend With a 2-0 Road Victory Vs. UNBC

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds are off to an 8-0 start in Canada West competition. Friday night in Prince George, Jesse Symons' squad secured their fifth road victory of the campaign thanks to a 2-0 triumph over the UNBC Timberwolves. Ella Sunde and Jacqueline Tyrer supplied the offense for the blue and gold while goalkeeper Sarah Johns put forth her fifth clean sheet in a span of seven matches.

From the jump, UBC applied pressure on the Timberwolves. Taiya Dennehy secured the first of what would end up being nine first-half shots just over one minute into the match. Conversely UBC held their foes to just one shot through the opening 24 minutes.

UNBC almost escaped the first half with a 0-0 tie, but during stoppage time Ella Sunde finally solved goalkeeper Brooke Molby on the ninth shot of the half for the blue and gold. Her second marker of the 2022 Canada West season put the visiting Thunderbirds ahead 1-0. The assist was credited to Jaqueline Tyrer.

The teams traded chances in the early moments of the second half, but Sarah Johns denied Paige Payne while Brooke Molby stopped a Rebecca Morgan attempt to keep the score at 1-0. Later in the 70th minute, Paige Payne would register another shot attempt at the UBC goal – The final shot attempt of the match for UNBC.

UBC got an emotional lift in the 63rd minute when three-year veteran Jacqueline Tyrer nabbed her first career Canada West goal (in her 23rd career appearance) off a set-up from Katalin Tolnai.

With the confidence of a two-goal cushion, the Thunderbirds put forth a strong defensive stand and cemented their eighth straight victory despite a late push from Paige Payne and the Timberwolves.

UBC wrapped up the match with a 16-5 edge in shots, and a 7-1 lead in corner kicks.

UBC will now travel East to Calgary and put their 8-0 record on the line in an 11 a.m. PT showdown with the Calgary Dinos on Sunday, September 25th.
