VANCOUVER – Sunday afternoon at Thunderbird Stadium the UBC Thunderbirds (4-2-0) will take to the pitch for their lone Canada West regular season battle of 2022 with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (1-4-2).
As the half-way mark of the season draws closer,
Mike Mosher's club Is looking to build off a solid week of training, following a 1-1 road trip in Alberta last weekend which ended with a gutsy 2-1 victory against Calgary on Sunday. Two goals in an eight-minute span from
Sebastian Dzikowski and
Logan Chung in the first half helped the weekend split. Big picture, the head coach is encouraged by how the identity of his team has started to take shape.
"Overall we're in a good place. I'm happy with the effort that we've brought forward in trainings and games," said
Mike Mosher. "In the two games we've lost to date we've played reasonably well. Are there areas we can be better in? Probably. But I'm relatively pleased at this stage."
The T-Birds are winning with depth and defense. Their 12 goals in six matches marks a tie for third most in Canada West, while their six goals against is tied for the third least. Mosher and his coaching staff can take plenty of solace in the fact that on any given day, any number of players are capable of stepping up to lead the charge.
Mosher explained, "Our goals for and against are in an okay place, but we can fine tune both areas though. I still think on a go forward we have to be tighter defensively. Right now we're at a-goal-a-game against, and that has to be better. But offensively we've got a lot of different players that can score. Our depth and quality allows us to rotate players which is always a key thing as you progress through a season with the goal of being a fresh team for the start of playoffs."
A terrific opportunity looms this weekend for UBC who will be facing a Saskatchewan team on the back-half of a two-game Western road-swing that first includes a stop in Prince George Friday for an evening tilt with the Timberwolves. In seven matches so far in 2022, the Huskies are 1-3-2 with 12 goals scored, and 16 goals surrendered – The second most in Canada West.
"I don't look a lot into the fact that they're playing Friday," pointed out Mosher. "They've got plenty of recovery time and they'll be ready to play us. For us it's all about focusing on what we can control and taking care of our business. There are no easy games. There's lots of good teams, lots of good coaches and each team has their own strengths and we'll need to be ready."
Sunday afternoon marks Saskatchewan's first visit to Vancouver since November 1, 2019 – A 2-0 victory for UBC. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. from Thunderbird Stadium. Tickets are available
