VANCOUVER – Tied 1-1 in stoppage time, it looked as if the UBC Thunderbirds Women's Soccer team's five game winning streak was about to come to an end, until
Rebecca Morgan scored her first of the season from the top of the box giving the blue and gold the 2-1 victory over the Manitoba Bisons Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.
Two minutes into stoppage time, Morgan received a nifty behind-the-back pass from
Ella Sunde. The third-year forward from Calgary stayed with the ball and powered it past Manitoba keeper Karina Bagi for the game winner as the number one ranked T-Birds earned a sixth straight victory while handing the Bisons just their second loss of the season.
"What character and mindset the team showed to push through and find the winner at the end," said UBC Head Coach,
Jesse Symons shortly after the comeback win. "These games show our character and what a goal to win the match at the end by
Rebecca Morgan. She works so hard and for her to finish that was pretty special for the team."
Scoreless at half time, the Bisons (3-2) got on the board first in the 60
th minute on a UBC own goal. T-Birds keeper
Sarah Johns had come out of her crease along the goal line, but a pass back from one of her defenders was a bit off the mark and the ball ended up baking in off the far post.
Undeterred, the T-Birds (6-0) kept at it and were rewarded when
Katalin Tolnai got the equalizer 11 minutes later with her league leading eighth of the season on a penalty after a heavy collision in the box. Tolnai stepped up to the spot and curved the ball with her right foot past a diving Bagi to extend her scoring streak to four games.
Still level through 90 minutes, the referee announced three minutes of added time which turned out to be more than enough for UBC with Morgan securing the victory, keeping the T-Birds atop the Canada West table.
Johns made two saves for her sixth win of the season while Bagi was by far the busier of the two keepers making six stops in total.
"We really started well and created some quality chances that we expect to score," added Symons. "I thought our back four were very solid today and kept them outside our box."
The T-Birds look to continue their unbeaten streak to start the season when they conclude their Manitoba road trip Sunday against the Winnipeg Wesmen. Kickoff is 9:00 a.m. PT and the game will be available on Canada West TV.
