VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (2-0-0) are heading home with a pair of victories from their opening weekend trek up Highway 1. Saturday night in Langley, B.C. the T-Birds earned a hard-fought 2-0 victory over the Trinity Western Spartans.
Nisa Reehal (3, 45') and
Danielle Steer (4, 70') supplied the second-half offense for UBC, but the story of the night was goalkeeper
Sarah Johns.
The fourth-year product of Calgary, AB made a single-game, career high eight saves – Five of which came in the first half with the game still tied at 0-0. For the weekend, Johns' shutout streak consisted of 135-plus minutes as the T-Birds outscored their opponents by a combined 10-0 margin.
Less than a minute into the second half,
Nisa Reehal put UBC up 1-0 off a setup by
Taiya Dennehy. Then in minute 71,
Danielle Steer notched her 44
th career goal in U SPORTS, doubling the Thunderbird lead in the process.
From there,
Jesse Symons' crew was able to keep the Spartans at bay despite 19 total shots faced.
The 2-0 Thunderbirds will now return home with their eyes set on their home opener which is set for Thursday, September 1
st against the University of Victoria.
