VANCOUVER – Following a strong opening round at the Golf Canada Canadian University Championship in Bromont, Quebec, the UBC Thunderbirds hold a four stroke lead atop the team leaderboard, led by freshman
Aidan Schumer's five-under par 67.
Schumer sits tied for the individual lead through 18 holes on the 6,732 yard Domaine Chateau Bromont in a round that included an eagle on the par five sixth hole.
As a team, the T-Birds are a collective five under, four strokes ahead of the Laval Rouge et Or, the only two teams currently in the red of the 18 University and College programs competing in the four-round championship.
Russell Howlett finished his opening round with a one-under 71, thanks in part to an eagle on the 17
th, as the freshman Thunderbird is tied for ninth overall in the 100-strong field.
Sophomore Ethan De Graaf holds part of an eight-way share of 11
th with an even par 72 on Wednesday while the T-Birds scoring quad was rounded out by
Dylan MacDonald's one-over 73.
Mackenzie Bickell shot a five-over 77, good for a 12-way tie for 48
th.
Schumer will be the first T-Bird to tee off in round two Thursday as he'll start on the 10
th hole at 8:40 a.m. ET/5:40 a.m. PT.
