UBC bats overpowered by Yotes pitching

VANCOUVER, BC – Saturday's double-header saw clear skies and warm sun as the UBC Thunderbirds matched up with the College of Idaho Yotes on Collings Field at Nobel Park. The visiting Yotes took the morning game 7-0, and followed by securing the series sweep with a 4-1 victory to close the weekend.

The Yotes powerful bats were on display early for the second-straight day as first year Shae Sever was not able to slow down an attack that posted back-to-back three run innings to lead 6-0 after two innings.

The T-Birds were not able to figure out Yotes starting pitcher Kately Wilfert on Saturday morning, as the right-handed pitcher threw a complete game, while registering five strikeouts on two hits.

Kaylee MacDannald and Makenna Luke each added two RBI in the 7-0 victory.

"We need to hit the ball more," said UBC Head Coach Gord Collings. "I think our defence played really well, the pitchers bounced back today and played well. Shae bounced back back with those 11 or 12 in a row after that last homerun and Shelby was great today. A couple of timely hits on their end was the difference today, other then that I thought we played them well today."

Game 2

Shelby Kempel opened as the starting pitcher for the last game of the series, and seemingly shut down the visitor's offence until a three run third inning broke the stalemate.

The visitors added one more run in the top of the fifth inning, as Lexi Villegas knocked an RBI single to centre field.

The 'Birds put pressure on Yotes pitcher Hannah McNerney in the bottom of the fifth inning, which began by Emily Sherritt taking first base after being hit by a pitch. She used her speed to steal second base, and then scored on a throwing error after Gabby Dorval muscled a groundball to third base. Savy Yotes defence closed the inning, leaving two T-Birds stranded on base.

A couple of earned walks in the bottom of the seventh was not enough to complete the comeback rally as McNerney closed UBC out to earn her 11th win of the season.

UBC will be on the road next week as they will visit Salem, Oregon to battle the Corban Warriors on April 22nd and 23rd.

"Corban's a crucial series," added Collings looking ahead to the T-Birds upcoming weekend road series. "We have to stay ahead of them for the playoffs as they're a game or two behind us but we have to get some hits going."
