VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds will make their home debut this weekend hosting the University of Providence (Mont.) Argonauts at the newly opened Collings Field at Nobel Park.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday, March 4 (1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. PT) and a single conference game on Saturday, March 5 (11 a.m. PT), immediately followed by a non-conference fixture.
Last weekend, the T-Birds (1-5, 1-2) dropped their season-opening series to the Southern Oregon Raiders in Ashland, Oregon. Despite earning an opening day split on Friday with an 8-6 victory followed by a 9-1 loss, the 'Birds fell twice to the eight-run rule on Sunday with 8-0 and 11-3 losses.
The Argos (0-4, 0-3) enter Friday having lost all four games last weekend to the Bushnell Beacons. Friday's results were 4-2 and 13-0, while Saturday's were 7-1 and 14-2.
The 2019 season saw the T-Birds win three of their four games against the Argos. Due to Covid-19, this weekend will be the first time the two teams have played each other in nearly two years.
UBC Softball begins the 2022 season with a bona fide home field for the first time since its establishment 12 years ago. Up until now, players were traveling to Softball City in South Surrey to train and compete. Thanks to donations from the Collings Stevens Family Foundation and support from community members, the field named in honour of legendary coach Gord Collings was opened on October 2, 2021.
Featuring a young but promising roster, the T-Birds officially open up a new era on campus in what will be an excitement filled weekend, hopefully ending in an historic series win to break in the new digs.
