VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds men's and women's golf teams worked through some difficult weather in Las Vegas, Nevada this week as they competed in The Paiute Battle; the women's team captured first place by a margin of two strokes, while the men finished in sixth place.
Following the cancellation of round one and a two-hour delay, players stepped onto the course Monday afternoon for the competitions first action. The elements challenged the field with hard and fast greens registering upwards of 12 on the stimpmeter.
Aidan Schumer sat six back of the clubhouse leader after his opening round of 75, while his teammates
Mackenzie Bickell and
John Paul Kahlert each posted rounds of 78. As a team, the men found themselves tied for seventh place heading into the final day of competition.
The women's team was led by
Una Chou, who finished the day tied for second place after shooting an opening round of 80.
Elizabeth Labbe found herself two shots back of her teammate with a round of 82, and steady play from
Esther Lee and
Emily Li earned scores of 83. The strength and depth of the 'Birds were on full display as the women's team led the field with a one-shot lead.
Schumer, Bickell, and Kahlert finished 10 over par and tied for 16
th place on the men's side, which placed them in sixth place to close the two-day competition.
Chou and Labbe continued their precise play in the final day as they finished tied for fifth place, shooting 18 over par.
Sonja Tang's final-round low of 78 helped her climb the leaderboards Tuesday as she finished the tournament tied for 10
th place.
The women's team continued to improve in the final round as they posted a consecutive quality score to capture the Paiute Battle title by two strokes.
