VANCOUVER – Thursday, December 8th at the Great Hall, the Academic All-Canadian Breakfast of Champions took place where 189 student athletes were recognized for their remarkable efforts in the classroom spanning the past year. It was a wonderful morning of celebration where the elite academic accomplishments of UBC student athletes took center stage!

The Academic All-Canadian Breakfast is an annual recognition event given for varsity athletes who have achieved an 80% or higher sessional average. This year, for the Winter session (2021-2022), 189 student athletes have qualified. In order to be considered an Academic All-Canadian, the athlete must meet all the athletic eligibility requirements outlined by their governing body of sport (U SPORTS, NAIA) and must have been charged in a season of competition for the year they are receiving the honour.

Among the honoured guests were many of the Academic All-Canadian student athletes, coaches and families along with select Senior administration, Athletics & Recreation Administration and UBC donors and alumni. Speakers included: Nancy Hermiston (University Marshall), Kavie Toor (UBC Managing Director, Athletics & Recreation), Natalie Hargott (Interim Manager, Athlete Services), Ainsley Carry (Vice President, Students), various faculty representatives, Max Richter (Perkins & Will/Athletics Sponsor), Erin McAleenan (UBC Women's Basketball head coach) and Chris Pritchett (Men's Baseball head coach).

Academic All-Canadians have been recognized by U SPORTS since 1988. 19 years ago, UBC began applying that standard to all varsity athletes and the annual All-Canadian breakfast has been held ever since.

The UBC Thunderbirds are very thankful to Perkins & Will, presenting sponsor once again for the 2022 Academic All-Canadian celebrations. The firm's global design practice features offices across the globe, including Vancouver, and has designed several locations on UBC's Vancouver campus such as the UBC Life Building and Orchard Commons. A special thank you as well to Associate Principal at Perkins & Will, Max Richter, a T-Bird Track & Field alumnus and two-time Academic All-Canadian himself who spoke at the event.
