VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds swept the 2022 Odlum Brown Colleges Cup in their first home meet of the season that showcased 250 top swimmers from across western Canada inside the UBC Aquatics Centre. The women's side captured first place with 1,064 points, the University of Calgary Dinos finished second with 991 points, and the Team BC high school all-star team was third with 791 points. UBC's men's team won with 1096.5 points, the Dinos came second with 1016.5 points and Team BC rounded out the top three with 649.5 points.
"I'm really pleased with the team – their attitude and effort," said UBC head coach
Derrick Schoof after their first big victories of the season. "We've been working really hard, and it hasn't been easy this year with illness and injury like all the other teams, but the kids are resilient. They're persevering and getting behind each other. I think this is good foreshadowing of what's to come. We've got a lot more in us, but this is a really good start. You've got to rely on your top guns and our top guns are stepping up – which leads to everyone else stepping up too. We saw lots of swims that were either personal best times or near personal bests and that's pretty good at this time of year."
Eloise Allen had an outstanding weekend for the 'Birds, as the first-year business student was victorious in the 100 and 200 breaststroke as well as the 50 freestyle and tallied a Thunderbird-best 91 points. Fellow 'Birds Alicia L'Archeveque (50 breaststroke), Emma O'Croinin (400 freestyle), and
Anna Dumont-Belanger (200 individual medley) also recorded individual wins for the blue and gold.
Standout Dino and Canadian Olympian Rebecca Smith won the 100 and 200 freestyle events and narrowly finished second in the 100 butterfly to the University of Victoria's Yasmin Perry – who touched the wall in a meet record time of 59.77. Perry also took top spot in the 50 butterfly with a time of 27.13 and the 200 butterfly in 2:11.37, while racking up 93 points on the weekend for the Vikes.
UBC's Hugh McNeill won the 400 individual medley in 4:18.63, the 100 backstroke in 54.33 and the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:54.60, while Justice Migneault set an impressive two meet records in the 100 individual medley (54.34) and the 200 individual medley (2:00.04). Blake Tierney and Liam Clawson-Honeyman also scored big for the 'Birds with wins in the 50 backstroke and 1500 freestyle, respectively.
Stephen Calkins had a big weekend for the Dinos, as the Calgary native set meet records in the 100 freestyle (48.03), the 50 freestyle (22.15), and the 50 butterfly (23.79) en route to 91 points for the University of Calgary.
Lethbridge's Apollo Hess swept the men's breaststroke events – capturing the 50 breaststroke with a time of 27.43, the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.46, and the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.14 for the Pronghorns.
"I think after this weekend we have a good sense of what needs to be worked on," said Schoof ahead of the conference championships later this month. "Around race-specific skills we have to fine-tune what we're practicing and have a bit of work to do around fitness skills and being more rested and ready to go. It's going to be a combination of what we do over the next three weeks, but I'm sure we're going to get there and it's going to be fun."
Next up for the Thunderbirds is a trip to Victoria, B.C., for the Canada West Championships on Friday, November 25
th through Sunday, November 27
th.
