CALGARY – It was a much better overall effort Saturday by the UBC Thunderbirds, but a third period power play goal by the host Calgary Dinos handed the blue and gold a third straight loss, this one a 2-1 decision at Father David Bauer Arena.
Connor Gutenberg scored the game winner with eight minutes left in the final frame to secure the Dinos (7-3-0) weekend sweep, and the season series win over the T-Birds (4-4-2).
"We responded after last night's performance really well," said UBC Head Coach Sven Butenschon. "We pressured the guys to come to the rink today, pick themselves off the mat after yesterday and we played hard, we played gritty, we were in it right until the end, we just couldn't execute on a couple chances. They had four power plays in the third period and by the end of the fourth, once when they finally scored, it was pretty gutting. We pulled our goalie and had three or four glorious chances but just couldn't finish, we're in a bit of a funk right now."

Josh Maser opened scoring for the Dinos 7:33 into the first after Max Patterson stole the puck, skated it down the right side and found Maser alone in the slot.
But before the break, the T-Birds got the much needed equalizer, courtesy of Jack Wismer's fourth of the season. Liam Kindree dished the puck to Jonathan Smart at the blue line. The UBC defenceman's point shot was deflected home by Wismer for the 'Birds' third power play goal of the weekend.
It took another 31 minutes before the game saw another – and as it turns out, the final – goal when Gutenberg wired a shot past Cole Schwebius who finished the game strong in the T-Birds' net, making 32 saves.

"He stepped up today and was very accountable and professional and looked real comfortable back there," said Butenschon of his rookie netminder. "He didn't overextend himself, didn't get himself in any trouble and made saves to keep us in it."
Looking to get out of their three game skid, the T-Birds are back home this coming Thursday, November 10, when they host the Trinity Western Spartans for the first half of a home-and-home series culminating Friday night in Langley.

"It's going to be a tough run until Christmas, we play every weekend against tough opponents and the fact we're not picking up points puts the pressure on so we're going to have to fix a few things and figure this out."
Puck drop Thursday is 6:00 p.m. PT at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
