VANCOUVER – Saturday afternoon in Victoria, the UBC Thunderbirds (2-2) captured their second consecutive victory thanks to a 40-26 victory over the University of Victoria Vikes.
Jack Carson and Forest Scarrwener each provided a pair of tries for UBC while
Max Abercrombie completed five converts.
Two weeks removed from a 30-14 defeat at the hands of the Vikes,
Curry Hitchborn's troops started Saturday's rematch with great energy – which resulted in three unanswered tries in the opening 22 minutes from
Koen Buckingham,
Jack Carson and Josh Downes.
Beginning at 28:50, Victoria responded with four unanswered tries in a 29-minute span to move them ahead, but fortunately the visitors had energy left for a late push.
In the 67
th minute, Forest Scarrwener completed his first of back-to-back tries – the latter of which came at 73*. Then
Jack Carson extended the UBC lead in the 77
th minute, moving the score to 40-26.
Unfortunately for the 'Birds, their pursuit of a 10
th consecutive Wightman Boot fell just short. Despite the loss on Saturday, Victoria maintained a two-point edge in the point-differential stemming from the September 17
th matchup at UBC (A 30-14 win).
The UBC Thunderbirds resume Canada West competition on Saturday, October 15
th in Langley against Trinity Western University.
