'Birds Keep First Place Within Their Sights After a 3-0 Win Over UFV

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (7-3-2) kicked off their weekend in fine fashion with a 3-0 road victory over the University of Fraser Valley Cascades (5-5-2). Victory Shumbusho, Nick Fussell and Asvin Chauhan supplied the goals for Mike Mosher's squad while Axel Thulin Lennselius made two saves on his way to a clean sheet performance.

The blue and gold drew first blood in the 32nd minute when Logan Chung picked the pocket of a Fraser Valley defender from just outside the penalty area. Chung then centered a pass to the waiting Victory Shumbusho who took three steps before blasting a point-blank shot past Jackson Cowx for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Later in the 41st minute, the 'Birds extended their lead to 2-0 when Nick Fussell cleverly redirected a right-side feed from Mihai Hodut home for his third of the Canada West season.

The shots through one half were 9-3 for UBC who also earned a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Both of Thulin Lennselius' saves came in the first half.

After a more even second-half territorially, the 'Birds nabbed their insurance marker during stoppage time and it came off the left foot of rookie Asvin Chauhan. The Coquitlam native stole the ball from a Fraser Valley defender, maneuvered his way to the outer-part of the 18-yard box (along the left side) and blasted a low shot home for his third of the campaign.

With the victory, UBC remains in control of their first-placed destiny in the Pacific Division. Heading into action tomorrow against Trinity Western, the blue and gold share the same seven win total as the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack, but temporarily trail them in the standings by a 24-23 margin. The Wolfpack are idle tomorrow and will no doubt be watching with keen interest to see if the UBC can earn their third straight victory.

Tomorrow's match with Trinity Western begins at 7:15 p.m. from Langley.
