EDMONTON – The UBC Thunderbirds began day two of the opening Canada West Rugby 7s tournament hosted by the University of Alberta with a dominant 54-0 victory against the Trinity Western Spartans. The 'Birds continued their stellar play inside Foote Field Dome, defeating the tournament host Alberta Pandas 33-12 to secure a first-place matchup against the undefeated Victoria Vikes. Sarah Kaljuvee led the way for her top-seeded unit scoring both tries in the 12-5 win over the T-Birds.
The win against the 'Birds finished off a perfect tournament for the Vikes, who posted a 6-0 record en route to capturing their fourth University of Alberta tournament title since 2017.
"Just so happy this tournament was able to go off. It's amazing to see all the teams here and competing so well, after basically a two-year hiatus. Our team honestly built game-by game, and we have a lot of talent on this squad," said Vikes head coach Brittany Waters. "It was a great team performance, everyone stepped up. We had some key injuries, but the healthy players really performed well."
Victoria led 7-0 until the T-Birds cut into the Vikes lead early in the second half. Kaljuvee locked up the Victoria win with a try in the final seconds and stay perfect for the weekend.
The Vikes were led by Krissy Scurfield who finished with a team-high seven tries, two of which came on Sunday. T-Birds
Savannah Bauder finished with a tournament-high eight tires, also adding four successful converts on Sunday.
"Obviously Krissy had an excellent weekend. She scored a ton of tries; her speed on defence and attack was amazing," continued Waters. "Huge effort from Summer Blackmore as well, working the middle of the field. Larah Wright was also excellent, doing a lot of that grunt work for us."
The host Alberta Pandas earned third place after a thrilling 17-12 overtime win against the Calgary Dinos as Shelby Pierce scored six minutes into sudden death OT. The Pandas scored the game-tying try in the final seconds of the second half because of Maria Sawiak's effort in from 5 yards out.
Lethbridge was awarded fifth place after Trinity Western was forced to forfeit their final match due to injuries. The Pronghorns knocked off the Spartans 26-12 in their first meeting earlier in the day.
