VANCOUVER - On a beautiful afternoon at Thunderbird Stadium, the UBC Thunderbirds Women's Soccer team emerged with a 3-0 win over the visiting UNBC Timberwolves, capping off a six-point weekend for the 'Birds.
Contrary to last night's match, the Timberwolves came out on the attack early trying to snag the early goal on the road. However, after a decent spell of possession, the Thunderbirds took over the game offensively and snagged the lead on 18 minutes. Rookie defender
Ella Nuttall-Smith played a ball over the top for Tess McCrae who swiftly finished in close over Brooke Molby in the Wolves net.
"What a goal from Tess McCrae to start the game," said UBC Â head coach
Jesse Symons. "We wanted her to get forward, she found a way to score as a leader on this team and it was great to see."
The Thunderbirds continued to apply the pressure late in the opening half but like Friday, the UNBC backline and Molby held strong defensively.
On a day when legendary long time Men's and Women's soccer coach Dick Mosher's celebration of life was being held, his granddaughter
Dani Mosher had a stellar second half. It began with her winning a penalty for the 'Birds in the 50
th minute. The ensuing penalty kick was taken by
Danielle Steer who doubled UBC's advantage to 2-0 .
Steer then added to her team's lead in the 54
th minute, making it 3-0 when she deposited a low ball from Mosher into the UNBC goal in tight.
The Timberwolves almost spoiled the UBC shutout late on in the game, as a Kiana Swift strike from outside the 18-yard box struck the crossbar and bounced away from trouble.
"We have a lot of depth and the players know if they are called upon we want to see them have good performances," added Symons. "I thought
Dani Mosher on a day like today, setting up the penalty and assisting on our third goal was pretty special."
With the win the T-Birds improve to 4-0 on the season while the T-Wolves fall to 0-6. UBC head back on the road for next Friday and Sunday as they take on the UFV Cascades at Matsqui Recreation Centre, you can catch all the action on Canada West TV presented by Co-Op.
Following the contest in the stands at Thunderbird Stadium UBC held a well attended Celebration of Life Ceremony for legendary head coach of both the men's and women's varsity soccer teams Dick Mosher.
Mosher, one of the most accomplished and influential figures throughout the decorated history of UBC varsity athletics influenced a generation of soccer talent on the pitch and future leaders in the classroom as a Professor of Kinesiology. The program included family, colleagues, and former players sharing stories of Mosher's ability to connect with and inspire student-athletes to reach their potential.
