VANCOUVER – With training camp complete, the UBC Thunderbirds Men's Hockey team is now shifting their focus to a renewed preseason tradition as the annual Captain's Cup Tournament, presented by the Vancouver Giants, gets underway this Friday, September 17
th as the T-Birds host Simon Fraser University at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
First established in 2017, the Captain's Cup promotes university hockey in the Lower Mainland while raising awareness for the WHL's Scholarship Program, available for players entering the post-secondary institution of their choice.
What began as a three-team competition between UBC, SFU, and Trinity Western University, the 2021 version of the Captain's Cup has been expanded to include the University of Victoria, and Vancouver Island University.
The T-Birds celebrate the inaugural Captain's Cup championship in 2017
"This tournament not only provides us with good competition heading into our regular season, but it showcases the many high level options for university hockey in B.C.," said UBC Head Coach
Sven Butenschon. "It's a terrific showcase of the post-secondary options for WHL players both to receive a degree from a highly respected university, and to continue to advance their playing careers."
With a total of 11 games, the tournament will be capped off with the championship final on Saturday, October 9
th hosted at UBC.
The T-Birds will open up the 2021-22 Canada West regular season on Friday, October 15
th when they host the TWU Spartans.
