UBC wins all three Day 1 games at Canada West sevens tournament in Victoria

VICTORIA, B.C. – The UBC Thunderbirds won all three matches Saturday at the final stop of the Canada West Women's Rugby Sevens Series in Victoria, B.C.

After picking up a pair of lopsided decisions in the morning, the T-Birds were in a battle with the No. 2 seed Alberta Pandas for the top spot in Pool B in Game 10.

Tied 12-12 at half, Kally King turned the game in UBC's favour with back-to-back tries to open the second half. Savannah Dubien supplied a try late, but the hole was too big for the Pandas to crawl out from. The T-Birds won 27-17.

UBC shut out Trinity Western by 46 points to start the day before beating Fraser Valley 41-7.

The results gave the T-Birds first place in Pool B, setting up a semifinal matchup with the Calgary Dinos Sunday at 11:36 a.m. PT. UBC entered the final weekend third in the conference, eight points off the lead.

Host Victoria was the other undefeated team on Day 1, clinching the Canada West women's rugby sevens title for the third year in a row. Only needing a fourth-place finish or higher to retain their conference banner, the Vikes won Pool A and at worst will finish fourth place in the playoff round tomorrow afternoon.

Victoria and Alberta will meet in the first semifinal tomorrow at 11:14 a.m. PT.
