VANCOUVER – The Alberta Golden Bears (2-0) scored twice on the power play and once short handed in a 5-0 rout of the UBC Thunderbirds (0-1-1) Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena having completed the season opening weekend sweep.

Alberta opened scoring early when Josh Paterson deflected a Sawyer Lange shot just 4:15 into the first frame for what stood up as the eventual game winner.

The game was delayed for several minutes shortly after when third-year UBC forward Matt Revel was injured, further depleting an already injury riddled T-Birds bench.

After play resumed, Ryan Jevne scored his first Canada West goal, shorthanded, midway through the frame to give Alberta a 2-0 lead.



The T-Birds weren't able to muster much in response as they were outshot 38-20 while failing to score on five power play chances. Alberta finished the night 2-for-6.

Rookie goaltender Matt Berlin earned his first career shutout in his first Canada West game.

"We were asking a lot from a lot of guys out there but we're not making excuses and we weren't great tonight," said UBC head coach Sven Butenschon. "We need to have a simpler game. I think we tried to do way too much. I don't know if it was fatigue but we had way too many guys playing individual hockey, playing complicated hockey and that doesn't work against an opponent like Alberta."

A fresh sheet of ice for the second period didn't help the 'Birds as it was the Bears who added to their lead just 56 seconds into the period when Trevor Cox converted on the power play.



Noah Philp scored his first goal as a Golden Bear just over two minutes later. Tyler Soy rounded out the scoring early in the third with his first of the season, Alberta's second power play marker of the game.

After picking up a single point in Friday night's season opening overtime loss, the T-Birds will rest and recuperate with a conference bye next weekend. The 'Birds will also prepare to hit the road the following Friday and Saturday when they face the Calgary Dinos October 11^th and 12^th.

"Sitting around for two weeks is going to sting a little bit, but with the injuries we need some time to recover and hopefully we can get some guys back," added Butenschon.

The Bears will head to Minnesota for a pair of contests against NCAA competition next weekend before returning to Edmonton for their home opening series against the Saskatchewan Huskies October 11^th and 12^th.
