CALGARY – The UBC Thunderbirds, the 10th-ranked women's soccer team in U SPORTS, earned their first win of the season, by a 2-0 score over the host Mt. Royal Cougars in Calgary.
"We really found our rhythm in the second half and with some better scoring boots would have really opened the scoring," said UBC head coach
Jesse Symons. "Our attacking players – Dani, Alyssa, Amelia, Vanessa, Michelle – really built momentum through the game. Tess (McRae) did a great job in midfield controlling the game both directions. Full credit to our back four and Emily (Moore) for another clean sheet. They have done a tremendous job managing the space around goal.Â
UBC (1-0-2) scored its first goal after just 12 minutes when forward
Alyssa Hunt found the back of the net on a penalty kick following a Cougars yellow card. The Thunderbirds maintained their 1-0 lead into halftime.Â

UBC dominated the second half firing 15 shots towards the MRU goal, forcing goalkeeper Katrina Greenley to make eight saves. However, she was unable to stop
Danielle Steer with 12 minutes remaining. Steer recorded her first goal of the season, with Hunt providing the assist.
In total, the T-Birds outshot the hosts 20-8, and had 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Emily Moore stopped seven shots to earn her second shutout in three conference outings.
UBC will face Lethbridge Sunday morning at 11 a.m. PT in southern Alberta.
"They have kept games really tight and we are going to have to reset and refresh our mindset to come with our ability we showed as the game went on," said Symons.Â
