‘Birds earn 2-0 win over visiting Pronghorns

VANCOUVER – The No. 6 UBC Thunderbirds (3-1-1) got back to their winning ways on a damp Saturday night at Ken Woods Field, defeating the Lethbridge Pronghorns (0-5-2) 2-0.

After falling to the Trinity Western Spartans a night earlier, the 'Horns were looking to get back on track and started the right way as they took the ball to the Thunderbirds in the first 10 minutes.

In the 14th minute, second year Lethbridge midfielder Danilo Morales received a great ball down the left and attacked UBC outside back Daniel Kaiser. Morales cut in to his favoured right foot and let one go that was deflected off a T-Bird and smashed the crossbar.

From that point on, UBC took it to the Albertans. Just a minute later, a quick attack by the home side gifted them a corner, and Thomas Gardner delivered a great ball into Jackson Farmer whose header was saved by senior Lethbridge keeper Matthew Vandervoort.

UBC held the ball for the majority of the rest of the half and their hard work was rewarded in the 31st minute. Gardner fed Mitch Piraux, who in turn put a through ball to Mackenzie Cole who swiftly deposited a left footed shot home to gift the 'Birds a 1-0 lead.

The second half began much like the first, with Mihai Hodut hitting a post five minutes after half time. One minute following that post, Hodut was once again influential as he fed second year midfielder Nick Fussell who took a touch and falling to his back, deposited the ball into the bottom corner to double the T-Birds' lead.

"I am proud of the way we approached the game," said a pleased UBC head coach Mike Mosher. "I thought the boys did what we asked them to do and we controlled the game from start to finish."

Next week, the men are on the road in another tough stretch of games in Alberta as they take on the MacEwan Griffins Saturday, September 21st followed by a visit to the Alberta Golden Bears on Sunday.

The Pronghorns host Fraser Valley and Thompson Rivers next weekend as they return home following a tough Lower Mainland trip.
