Pang scores for UBC in 1-1 draw

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — A top 10 U SPORTS men's soccer battle between the No. 5 UBC Thunderbirds and the ninth-ranked Thompson Rivers WolfPack ended in a 1-1 draw Saturday in Kamloops.

Defender Riley Pang put the visitors up 1-0 on Warner Rentals Field at Hillside Stadium with a ninth-minute goal. He went left corner on 'Pack goalkeeper Jackson Gardner for his first score of the season.

TRU evened things up in the 35th minute as Dylan Hooper got the ball on the right side and drove down field. He chipped the ball to the left side of the penalty area where James Fraser broke free and blasted it into the left side of the net.

The Thunderbirds had a number of chances in the second half, registering 10 shots on goal. In the 87th minute, third-year forward Victory Shumbusho was hauled down, which resulted in a penalty kick that missed the mark.

Both Gardner and UBC 'keeper Jason Roberts made four saves. Roberts had two in the first and two after halftime. Gardner made only one save in the first and had three in the second half.

UBC (2-0-1) dominated in corner kicks with nine (five in the first half) to TRU's four (all in the first half).  They also had 16 shots on goal in total to TRU's nine.

The Thunderbirds will face UBC Okanagan in Kelowna Sunday at 3 p.m.
