VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds softball team's playoff hopes took a bit of a hit Friday with a pair of losses to the host Carroll (Mont.) Saints in Helena, Mont.

With 6-1 and 6-3 wins, Carroll (16-21, 9-14 CCC) moved a game ahead of UBC (12-21, 8-15) into fifth place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings. The top six teams in the league will earn a berth to the CCC championship tournament in Ashland, Ore. The Thunderbirds occupy the final playoff spot, with four more teams close behind. Providence (Mont.) is 7-16 in conference play, Eastern Oregon and Northwest Christian (Ore.) both sit at 6-17, while Northwest (Wash.) is 5-18.

Game 1
Carroll built a 6-0 lead after four innings, thanks in part to three home runs.

Mia Valcke struck back for UBC in the top of the fifth inning. The rookie hit an RBI single to center field to score
Shaelyn Ogilvie, who led off the inning with a single. However, the Thunderbirds couldn't get any closer against Saints starting pitcher Tess Eaton, who threw a complete game to earn the win.

Sierra Sherritt went 2-for-3 batting for UBC, while Valcke was 2-for-4.

Game 2
The Saints continued their home-run barrage in Game 2, accounting for all of their offence in a 6-3 triumph.

Senior outfielder
Claire Eccles gave the Thunderbirds a 2-0 advantage in the third inning with a home run that also scored Sherritt, who led off with a single to left field.

The Saints responded as Sell hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to put the Saints up 4-2.Â

UBC got a run back in the top of the fifth on a
Michaela Moore RBI groundout that allowed Sherritt to come home.

Allison Williams knocked her second home run of the day in the fifth inning to effectively seal the game, driving a two-run shot over the fence in center to give the Saints the 6-3 margin.Â

Sherritt was 2-for-3 at the plate for the second-straight game for the T-Birds. The senior also scored a pair of runs to cap off an impressive day offensively. Eccles was 1-for-3 with a couple of runs batted in.

The two teams will play another doubleheader Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. MT / 10 a.m. PT.
