T-Birds drop doubleheader in Idaho

CALDWELL, Idaho – Colette Robert and Hannah McNerney each tossed complete game shutouts, lifting the College of Idaho to key 12-0 and 1-0 Cascade Conference victories over UBC at Symms Field.

Trystin Crofts went 4-for-4 with five RBI in the five-inning opener, while Alyssa Goff took a potential go-ahead two-run homer away with a leaping catch in left to end Game 2, giving the Yotes (20-6, 8-3 CCC) sweep.

Robert dominated Game 1, tossing a 2-hitter, limiting the T-Birds (8-7, 5-3) to just one runner past second base – walking a pair and striking out four for her tenth win.

Crofts opened the scoring with a ringing RBI double into left-center in a 4-run first inning. She capped a 4-run third with a 2-run single and added a 2-run double in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 12-0.

The Yotes had 14 total hits in the Game 1 win, with Kylie Smith, Haley Loffer, Delaney Atkins and Aleah Mendiola all recording two hits.

Game 2 was a pitchers' duel between McNerney and UBC's Kaia Gyorfi – with both teams stranding nine base runners in the contest.

UBC had their chances in the first two innings – stranding the bases loaded in the opening frame and leaving runners at first and third in the second. C of I loaded the bases in their second – with Smith lofting a sacrifice fly to score Mendiola with the lone run of the game.

McNerney did the rest, retiring 10 batters in a row until a bloop single by Avery Hilpert with two outs in the seventh. Mia Valcke followed with a deep drive to left, with Goff leaping at the wall to snag the blast to close the victory.

Gyorfi allowed five hits and struck out eight in the loss for UBC, with Taylore Jones and Hilpert each recording two hits. McNerney surrendered six singles, walking one and striking out six for her fourth win.

The two teams close out the series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. MT / 10 a.m. PT doubleheader.
