Vancouver – An energetic blue and gold crowd of over 1,000 UBC student athletes, coaches, supporters, alumni and donors celebrated the 20
th annual of the ZLC Millennium Scholarship Breakfast Tuesday morning at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
Since its inception, the ZLC Millennium Breakfast has been dedicated to raising funds for student athlete scholarships and awards. Throughout the 20-year history, the University has been committed to matching donations from tickets sales dollar for dollar and on this significant milestone anniversary it was revealed that over 12.6 million dollars has been raised for student athletes since 1999. This powerful fundraising opportunity for varsity teams better enables student athletes to complete their degree while competing at one of the most decorated varsity programs in the country.
Just one of the highlights included UBC President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Santa Ono introducing the new Vice President of Students, Dr. Ainsley Carry who will formally begin his new role on April 1. Dr. Carry joins UBC from the University of Southern California (USC) where he has served as VP for Student Affairs since August 2013.
All in attendance were also enthused to have Dr. Greg Wells as the morning's key note speaker, addressing many topics that so many of the current and former athletes turned executives in the crowd could relate to. Wells, a scientist, broadcaster, author, coach and athlete has dedicated his career to understanding human performance and how the human body responds to extreme conditions. In his presentation Wells used both science and experience to draw parallels between elite athletes and top executives to help business leaders perform at the highest level, even under the most extreme circumstances.
To cap off the morning in style, the founder of the Millennium Breakfast and Director at ZLC Financial Group, Marty Zlotnik, received the prestigious Order of the Thunderbird. This award goes to individuals who have dedicated longtime unwavering support to UBC Varsity Athletics, and the award has only been handed out on three previous occasions.
