VANCOUVER – The 2019 U SPORTS National Champion UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team enjoyed a unique and privileged opportunity last Thursday, November 28 as their recent title win was recognized at the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia in Victoria.
Representing the T-Birds inside the B.C. Parliament buildings and returning to Victoria where they had hoisted the trophy just three weeks prior at Centennial Field on the University of Victoria campus was goalkeeper
Emily Moore and defender
Anisha Sangha.
Moore and Sangha were present in the gallery as Attorney General David Eby began the sitting by acknowledging the two fourth-year student athletes in attendance along with their teammates in what was a proud moment for UBC athletics and the storied women's soccer program.
Following the morning session and making the experience even more memorable was Moore and Sangha relishing the opportunity to be included in photos with Premier John Horgan, Minister Eby, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity Mitzi Dean and Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors and Multiculturalism Anne Kang.
The UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team was approached with the well-earned recognition after what was a magical run that saw the T-Birds upset opponents at every stage en route to a 1-0 defeat of the Canada West Champion University of Calgary in the title game on Sunday, November 10. It was fitting Moore and Sangha were representing the blue and gold at the Legislature as they both played a big role in the 'Birds being so stout defensively, battling their way to three straight 1-0 wins, culminating with a record-extending seventh national championship for the program. Moore, who was named a tournament all-star, didn't allow a goal against while Sangha played every minute on defence in helping stymie the opposition.
The acknowledgement was yet another great moment for the T-Birds women's soccer team who wrapped up a whirlwind month of November they'll always remember.
