T-Birds earn narrow lead after day two at the Canada West Championships

LETHBRIDGE – With historical swimming powers, UBC Thunderbirds and Calgary Dinos, going toe-to-toe, results from day two of the Canada West Championships set up an exciting third and final day of swimming in Lethbridge as both team titles are far from decided.

Following a win in the men's 4 x 100 freestyle relay, the defending Canada West Champion UBC Thunderbirds moved into a tie for first place with the Calgary Dinos with 464 points. The Victoria Vikes sit third with 305 points and just behind in fourth sits the Alberta Golden Bears (238). With 19 Canada West men's titles in their history, the T-Birds will look for a big day three and strive to tie the Dinos for the most in Canada West history with a 20th title.

After trailing by only 7.5 points after day one, the Thunderbird women have moved into the lead through 24 events thanks to four gold medal performances. With 552.5 points, the T-Birds only hold a 22.5 point lead with one day to go. Sitting in third place is the Victoria Vikes (319), followed by the Alberta Pandas (176.5).

UBC's Hoi Lam Karen Tam won the 50 freestyle in 25.33, with teammate Quincy Brozo taking silver in 25.39, while Megan Dalke captured gold in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:42.27. Fellow T-Bird Olivia Ellard claimed the 200 backstroke gold in 2:08.70 while the 'Birds relay team of Tam, Brozo, Dalke and Mackenzie Gunther won the 4 x 100 freestyle relay in 3:41.71.

Manitoba's Kelsey Wog continued to rewrite the record book, breaking her own record in the 100 breaststroke en route to another gold medal with a time of 1:05.07. Not done there, in the relay, her opening leg of the 4 x 100 free relay broke the conference record.

While no men's records fell on day two, the T-Birds and Dinos put forth plenty of excitement - flip-flopping places after nearly every race and with the Pronghorns sneaking in for the silver medal in the relay the Thunderbirds first place finish allowed them be tied with seven events to go.

UBC picked up four gold medals to go along with two silver medals with Nicolas Duke, Jaren LeFranc and Alexander Pratt picking up individual gold medals. The Dinos snatched seven medals but only one gold medal, thanks to Robert Hill's win in the 100 butterfly.
