VANCOUVER –
Sophie Damian and
Natasha Klasios scored in a seven-minute span in the first half to lift the UBC Thunderbirds to a 2-1 triumph over the host Thompson Rivers WolfPack Friday in Kamloops, B.C.
Â
Klasios opened the scoring with her first regular season goal as a T-Bird in the 30th minute before Damian bagged her third of 2019 in the 37th.
Â
Klasios, a transfer from the University of Toronto, drove to the net from the left side after getting a feed from
Alyssa Hunt. Damian doubled the UBC lead after shooting the ball to the lower right side of the net.
Â
The youthful TRU squad got most of the chances early in the first half. One of the best came in the 22nd minute when Camryn Curts sent the ball ahead to Taylor Miller. She spotted Chantal Gammie, who got a piece of it but couldn't beat UBC goalkeeper
Emily Moore, who stopped all three shots she faced in the opening half.
Â
The Thunderbirds had 11 shots in the first 45 minutes, with seven on target.
Â
UBC led by two at the mid-game break.
But in the 56th minute, Curts took a throw-in from Miller on the right side and was able to maneuver around two defenders and use her left foot to put the ball into the net. Her second goal of the year cut her team's deficit in half. It was the WolfPack's first-ever regular season goal against UBC.
Â
After Curts' goal, TRU had two other great chances for the equalizer, including one in the 87th minute when Miller broke in and pulled Moore out of position. She fired the ball towards the empty cage where a UBC defender just barely kicked it out.
With the win, UBC improves 5-1-3 on the season, while Thompson Rivers falls to 1-5-3. The final shot total was 21-14 in favour of the Thunderbirds, with UBC holding an 11-7 advantage in shots on net.
Â
It was the first match for WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington against his old squad he was an assistant coach under
Jesse Symons for three years.
Â
UBC will head to Kelowna for a 5:30 p.m. contest Saturday at UBC Okanagan.
